Nigellin® - A time honored remedy

Extracted from the seed of cumin (Nigella sativa), the black cumin is traditionally used in cases of inflammation, immune deficiency (and anti-cancer action by Cancer Immuno-Biology Laboratory of Hilton) of the liver, or still nasal congestion or headache / throat / tooth. Sabinsa studied various activities including antimicrobial and antifungal activity (Sabinsa indicated synergy with various antibiotics) as well as anti-parasitism, activity on the respiratory system (the extract would act as a natural anti-elastase), and more recently anti-inflammatory and analgesic. This Capacity to Restore Harmony is reported by Sabinsa in their literature :
  • Helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels
  • Helps boost men’s health
  • Helps manage healthy blood sugar levels
  • Most potent and favourable to respiratory conditions
Black cumin is also traditionally used in patients with diabetes. Rchid H and col. (2005) have shown that cumin seed has an effect on insulin secretion. Another activity reported is the help with digestion: Carminative activities facilitate digestion and relieve gas problems in the stomach and intestines. It helps peristalsis and therefore elimination.
  • Nigellin (5%) : Sabinsa’s Nigellin® is obtained from the seeds of Nigella sativa (Black Cumin) and standardized to contain Thymoquinone (standardized to 5%), fatty acids (standardized), as well as Thymohydroquinone, Hederagenin and can be added with Rosmarinic acid.
  • Nigellin 20% : New grades launched in 2021 by Sabinsa, standardized to 20% Thymoquinone, still by HPLC (powder on MgCarbonate with or without fibers, or oil)
A study has been published on end 2018 on the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating properties, where Nigellin® is among the most valued in anti-asthma herbal products. Nigellin had the highest effects in suppressing the release of cytokines IL-2, IL-6 and PGE2 in T-lymphocytes and also in monocytes hindering the expression on IL-2 and PGE2. These are among the most active cytokines involved in asthmatic conditions. The investigators noted a positive relationship between the TQ level in the preparations and its inhibitory potency on IL-6 and PGE2... besides existing and proved properties : glycemic control, healthy blood pressure, lipid profile, male fertility..Nigellin is available as
  • oil (Nigellin BCS or 20% - Amber),
  • black and white powders (Nigellin BCS or 20% - Onyx and Nigellin or 20% BCS - Pearl, respectively).
Study : « Comparative immunomodulatory activity of Nigella sativa L. preparations on proinflammatory mediators, Asthma ».Study : Use of Nigella sativa (NS) on patients with scalp disorder (Telogen effluvium) : significant increment of hair density and hair thickness in patients treated with NS
