Schizandra - Schizandrins : Alzheimer, Liver, menopause

Native to forests of Northern China and the Russian Far East, it’s known under the name of “five-flavor berry” - as it is salty, sweet, sour, pungent (spicy), and bitter – and gomishi in Japan..Its berries are used in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is considered one of the 50 fundamental herbs, also used to produce a wine. In traditional Chinese medicine, S. chinensis is mentioned to act as an astringent for the Qi of the lungs and kidneys, restrain the essence to treat diarrhea, arrest excessive sweating from deficiency of yin or yang, calm the spirit by refreshing the heart and kidneys, and generate body fluid and reduce thirst. In Russia, ethnopharmacological investigations of Russian scientists mentioned it improves night vision, and as a tonic and to reduce hunger, thirst, and exhaustion. It’s regularly reported as an adaptogen..Pharmacological studies on animals have shown that Schisandra increases physical working capacity and affords a stress-protective effect against a broad spectrum of harmful factors..The actives are major lignans, as schisandrins (Schisandrins A, B, and C, Schizandrol)
  • Alzheimer : Schisandrin B would have positive effect on Alzheimer’s disease (study 2017), due to ability to block formation of excess amyloid beta peptides in the brain. These peptides are one of the components responsible for forming amyloid plaque, a substance found in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Schisandrin C is reported to be effective against liver damage in people with both acute and chronic hepatitis, a liver disease.
  • On women with menopausal symptoms, a study (2016) for one year determined that Schisandra is effective at alleviating some symptoms of menopause (hot flashes, sweating, and heart palpitations)
Different grades are available depending on the schizandrin standardization (Schizandrol A + Schizandrin A + Schizandrin B) or more specifically schisandrin B pnly, both by HPLC. The suggested dosage is about 5mg – 10mg per day
