Ursolic acid / Ursolate - Muscle mass (Nutrition) and skin conditioning (cosmetic)
Ursolic acid is extracted from Sage (Salvia officinalis) or from Rosemary. is a pentacyclic triterpene acid, mainly used in cosmetics that is said also to be capable of inhibiting the STAT3 activation pathway (cancer, NF-kB, reduction of reducing expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 via glucocorticoid receptors).- In cosmetic, it is a skin conditioning agent that functions as an antioxidant in anti-aging compositions, sun protection products including oils, creams, lotions and lip balms. It also works as an antimicrobial agent in compositions to support the treatment of diaper rash, wounds and burns. It supports collagen fiber bundle reconstruction and elastin synthesis, benefits on photo-aged skin, tissue repair, hair care for conditioning and repair. It's also reported in anti-aging and rejuvenative compositions, and as an anti-inflammatory (5-lipoxygénase) agent, it helps treat psoriasis and related skin conditions. Ursolate is a salt of Ursolic acid developed by Sabinsa (70% Sodium Ursolate, max 30% Sodium Oleanolate) for also cosmetic applications : resistant barriers on the skin and hair, inhibition of enzymes that degrade skin structure, anti-radical and UV protection.
- In Nutrition, it helps to preserve muscle mass (helps fight against age-related sarcopenia (muscle atrophy) or in people following a diet, and against aging) in people It is also an anti-inflammatory natural and a recognized anti-aging compound. Ursolic acid can also serve as a starting material for synthesis of more potent bioactive derivatives. It has been found to reduce muscle atrophy and to stimulate muscle growth in mice. Ursolic acid has potential use as a cardioprotective compound.
