PteroWhite® - Anti-Aging, Skin Brightening, and SPF Benefits
Sabinsa's pTeroWhite® Subject of Two New Published Studies Reporting Anti-Aging, Skin Brightening, and SPF Benefits. Two new studies have recently been published on the topical benefits of Sabinsa’s pTeroWhite® natural pterostilbene isolated and purified from Pterocarpus marsupium heartwood and formulated as a cream. The studies further the body of science into pTeroWhite®’s value as a cosmeceutical ingredient for anti-aging, skin brightening, and as a natural SPF agent.- An Open-Label Single-Arm, Monocentric Study Assessing the Efficacy and Safety of Natural Pterostilbene (Pterocarpus marsupium) for Skin Brightening and Antiaging Effects , published in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology, was conducted as an open-label, single-arm, monocentric efficacy investigation in 38 healthy volunteers who applied a cream containing 0.4% pterostilbene for eight weeks. The dermatological assessment, together with instrumental and image analysis, suggests that pterostilbene effectively improves skin brightness, elasticity, reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and improves skin texture as compared to baseline in the subjects studied. The researchers observed a positive change at all time points in skin hydration and elasticity in both male and female subjects with regular usage of the pTeroWhite® cream. They found significant improvement in under-eye fine lines at all-time points and in wrinkles, frown lines, and crow’s feet area at the end of the study. The pterostilbene preparation was able to improve the skin luminosity with continuous application.
- A second clinical study, A Randomized Study to Determine the Sun Protection Factor of Natural Pterostilbene from Pterocarpus Marsupium , published in the journal Cosmetics, demonstrated the effect of pTeroWhite® as a natural SPF ingredient. A cream formulation, containing 0.4% of pTeroWhite®, was evaluated in 12 healthy volunteers as per the ISO 24444:2010 regulations and showed an in vivo SPF value of 6.2 ±1.30. The cream was found to be safe and nonirritant in a repeated patch test conducted in 25 healthy individuals before the SPF study. The cream showed an SPF of 8.84 ±0.01 in vitro, while pTeroWhite® as an ingredient had an SPF value of 21.73 ±0.06.

Pterocarpus - Or Malabar kino, Indian kino tree, or vijayasar
Pterocarpus marsupium (= Kino de Malabar = Indian Kino) is used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine as one of the most important ingredients in preparations for managing diabetes. Since ancient times, Ayurvedacharyas have used pieces of bark of Pterocarpus to manage diabetes. Its different parts have been used in cosmetic preparations aimed at soothing dry irritated and scaly skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and dark circles, and in nutrition to support normal blood physiology, promote urinary tract health, support weight management and support healthy cholesterol levels.
Pterostilbene - a stilbenoid, defensive phytoalexin in plants - is the most important bioactive.
Pterocarpus marsupium is considered in the endangered species category by the World Conservation Monitoring Center. The alarm has been sensed by Sami-Sabinsa group which, to act accordingly, launched a reforestation project. The group has committed to fund about $ 500,000 for this 10-year reforestation project, which it claims is the first initiative to conserve this high-value, multipurpose, threatened species in India. The project earned the Nutra-Ingredients-USA Editors Award for Industry Initiative of the Year for 2018.
