Levodopa - L-DOPA, dopomaine precursor
L-DOPA (also known as levodopa) is an amino acid that is made and used as part of the normal biology of humans, as well as some animals and plants Due to its high content of L-dopa, Mucuna pruriens seeds have been recognized for their ability to significantly alleviate neurotoxicity induced by Parkinson's disease. L-DOPA crosses the protective blood-brain barrier, whereas dopamine itself cannot. Thus, L-DOPA is used to increase dopamine concentrations in the treatment of Parkinson's disease and dopamine-responsive dystonia. The endocarp of the seed of Mucuna pruriens contains approximately 5% levodopa (L-dihydroxy-phenylalanine) which exhibits various key properties:- Treatment of Parkinson's disease, probably by the action on the inhibition of cholinesterase and the accumulation of acetylcholine
- Androgenic effects: described as an aphrodisiac in Ayurvedic literature, Mucuna pruriens extract has been the subject of various studies (ejaculatory latency, erection, decrease in hyper-arousal, etc.).
- Action on the nephric nerve
10% to 30% L-Dopa, extracetd from seeds.
