Banaba - Blood sugar levels, and not only
Lagerstroemia speciosa (or Indian lilac) is a tree species native to tropical Asia, where traditional medicine uses banaba leaves to treat overweight, obesity and high blood sugar (for people predisposed to the development of insulin resistance typical of metabolic syndrome), but also to treat type II diabetes and kidney problems.
In addition to these properties, banaba leaves offer other benefits, such as cholesterol-lowering, antioxidant and anti-obesity effects: recent studies have demonstrated anti-obesity activity, through the action of inhibiting adipogenesis and lipogenesis.
The hypoglycemic action is mainly related to the corosolic acid extracted from the leaves, hence the name "green insulin" because of this ability to modulate the levels of insulin and glucose. In addition to this action, its potential for blood sugar control helps reduce cravings related to fluctuations in blood sugar so as to promote weight loss. Various studies have demonstrated the inhibitory action of α-amylase, or also of α-glucosidase by corosolic acid.
Ayuerveda - The traditional medicine originating in India
Ayurveda - or Ayurvedic medicine - is the form of traditional medicine originating in India, which draws its sources from the Veda, the set of sacred texts. Ayurveda describes the human being as being composed of the five Mahabhutas, the three doshas (the basic energies of the living), the seven dhatus (the tissues) and the sixteen shrotas (the channels which carry the doshas through all the organization). Many plants and plant extracts are derived from Ayurvedic medicine.
