Numbers of species of Garcinia exist. The best-known species are Garcinia cambodgia, also known as Garcinia gummi-gutta (Garcinia ou Tamarin de Malabar in french), or Mangostana cambogia, and Garcinia indica (still axaiting for approval in europe). It contains (-)-Hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which is an active ingredient extracted from the rind of the Indian fruit Garcinia cambogia. It inhibits adenosine triphosphate citrate lyase and has been used in the treatment of obesity.
Garcinia indica, also a plant in the mangosteen family (Clusiaceae), commonly known as kokum, is a fruit-bearing tree that has culinary, pharmaceutical, and industrial uses. The rind of the fruit is also a good source of hydroxycitric acid which has been claimed to modify lipid metabolism, and more recently of Garcinol
