Scutellaria - Baicalin impacts mood and reduces anxiety
Scutellaria baicalensis, also named scutellaire, Baikal skullcap or Chinese skullcap, is native to China, Korea, Mongolia, and Russia in the Russian Far East and Siberia. It is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine - the dried roots of this plant have been used for centuries as a traditional Chinese medicine known as Huang Qin to treat diarrhea, insomnia, dysentery, high blood pressure, hemorrhaging, respiratory infections, and inflammation. In Asia, a popular formulation used to treat conditions like fevers, gastrointestinal issues, and liver disease
Baicalin ( glucuronide of baicalein) is a flavone glycoside (flavonoid). Baicalin, along with its aglycone baicalein, is a positive allosteric modulator of the benzodiazepine site and/or a non-benzodiazepine site of the GABAA receptor. It also produces anxiolytic effects without sedative or myorelaxant effects.
Baicalin is then also a known prolyl endopeptidase inhibitor (induces apoptosis in pancreatic cancer cells). It so impacts mood and reduces anxiety by stimulating gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that helps calm nerves.
