Vanizem is derived from sustained cultivated sourced Aframomum melegueta of West African origin and uses Nektium’s proprietary extraction and bioactive standardization

Aframomum melegueta seeds are known as the spice for cooking, especially from West African, but also in EU and US. It is a Zingiberaceae (ginger family), meaning ‘chili pepper’ in Portuguese. Maniguette – the name in French - was one of the main export commodities from the West African coast from the 14th century, and gave its name to the Pepper Coast in the Gulf of Guinea. The species has also been introduced to the Caribbean (Martinique and Trinidad and Tobago) and South America (French Guiana and Guyana).

Also known as Grains of Paradise, besides the use as a spice for seasoning food, it has also been used for treating many digestive system issues among others.

A set of validated psychometric test questionnaires was collected before and 48h after the first intake. A. melegueta extract interaction with canonical endocannabinoid receptors (hCB1R and hCB2R), the serotonin receptor (5HT1AR) and gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor (GABAA1R) was evaluated by the radioligand binding assay. Additionally, receptor functional assays and enzyme inhibition assays were conducted to test the extract’s functional activity on the non-canonical endocannabinoid receptor (TRPV1) and the cannabinoid fatty-acid amide hydrolase enzyme (FAAH), respectively.
